Richmond, Virginia –
Defense Logistics Agency Aviation military members from Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia, and students from the Army Logistics University’s Basic Officer Leadership Course and the Army Instructor Training Course from Fort Lee, came together to visit veterans at local facilities in Hopewell on Nov. 9 and Nov. 11. The visit was to honor and remember the former and current veterans for their sacrifices in preserving our freedoms.
The group visited and presented certificates to 15 veteran residents at Gentiva Hospice Center’s River View on the Appomattox facility.
Among those who visited were and ALU’s Basic Officer Logistics Course student, Army 2nd Lt. Nickole Kaple. She said her biggest takeaway was the immediate connection she felt between the Veterans in the facility and herself. “While our experiences in the Armed Forces differ, our appreciation of one another and our appreciation of all soldiers young and old, instantly bonds us,” said Kaple.
She also said she believes it is important to recognize our veterans because many did not receive the respect they deserved when returning from war during their time of service.
“I certainly would not be standing here today, wearing this uniform, if not for the countless sacrifices of those who served before me,” said Kaple.
DLA Aviation’s Army Maj. Alex Shimabukuro, operations officer, Customer Facing Division in the Customer Operations Directorate spoke to the group highlighting the significance of Veterans Day and honoring those who have served and are currently serving our nation. He also gave an overview highlighting DLA Aviation's and Fort Lee's military support to the local community.
“I am going to make visiting our Veterans a traditional part of my celebration of Veteran’s Day,” said Shimabukuro.
