Fun at work: employees’ children visit NSA Philadelphia

More than 440 children accompanied their parents for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day April 27 at Naval Support Activity Philadelphia.

In addition to exploring parents’ work settings, meeting coworkers and watching their parents on-the-job in different units across the base, first through eighth-grade students were also able to learn more about the missions of Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support and NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support through interactive activities.

“The airplane station had three types of airplanes, and my favorite was the little one,” said Malaysia, 9, as she detailed her experience at different booths throughout Bldg. 6 that displayed various base missions.

“I liked the little [aircraft] because it would have probably been easier to get in,” she said. “If you work in a big airplane, you could probably fall down.”

The children were able to climb in and out of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, up-armored Light Medium Tactical Vehicle, up-armored Humvee and military ambulance Humvee.

Malaysia reflected on the task of reaching one of the steps on a vehicle.

“It was far, far away from the ground,” she said.

Few interactive military experiences would be complete without the opportunity for physical training. Army Sgt. 1st Class Troy Pringle, Troop Support Military Personnel Office, led kids in running in place and side straddle hops, or jumping jacks. Kids were also able to play basketball, jump rope and hula hoop.

“I can't count how many smiling faces I saw today; I know the children really enjoyed themselves while learning about the great work we do every day,” said Mikia Muhammad, public affairs specialist at DLA Troop Support and event organizer.
