On May 2, Navy Rear Adm. Vincent Griffith, director of Defense Logistics Agency Logistics Operations, visited Norfolk, Virginia, for a tour of the pre-commissioned unit USS Ford, and of DLA Distribution’s operations.

Griffith took a tour of the USS Ford, had lunch onboard with the ship’s supply officers, and then visited Pier 8, where DLA Distribution talked about the upcoming Operation Pacer Goose mission.  The Norfolk team highlighted the capabilities Pier 8 offers, and the strategic capability of their stevedores.  The annual Pace Goose operation is a resupply of Thule Air Force Base in Greenland.

Navy Capt. Harry Thetford, commander of DLA Distribution Norfolk, described the upcoming Operation Pacer Goose as “providing outstanding support to the warfighters inside the Arctic Circle, and an opportunity to flex our muscles with partners from Military Sealift Command and Navy Cargo Handling Battalions.”

Griffith talked to employees about DLA deployment opportunities to places like Afghanistan, stressing their importance to the global mission.  “I want to thank the employees for what they do each and every day for the warfighter,” said Griffith.  “There is great value added by DLA civilians who volunteer to deploy to places like Afghanistan.”

Griffith closed his visit talking about the value of mentorship.  "I would not be where I am today without the honest mentors I had throughout my career,” he said.
