Feds Feed Families underway at DLA Philadelphia

By DLA Troop Support Public Affairs

The local Feds Feed Families food drive opened June 20, and Defense Logistics Agency employees in Philadelphia have already donated 962 pounds of food as of June 27.

Feds Feed Families was created to help food banks and pantries stay stocked during summer months when they traditionally see a decrease in donations and an increase in need, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which leads the campaign.

Several employees and their families volunteered to decorate the collection boxes. Donations of non-perishable food can be donated at five locations:

  • Building 3 - Oasis C
  • Building 5 - Oasis C - near the motor pool
  • Building 6 - Oasis C - outside the cafeteria
  • Building 26 - 2nd floor near the elevator
  • Building 36 - 1st floor near the TV

The collection will run through the end of August. Food will be donated to Philabundance, which supports Philadelphia, Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, Salem, Camden, Gloucester, Bucks and Burlington counties in Pennsylvania and Delaware.

The Department of Health requires that all cans have labels and that packaged goods must be factory-sealed, in good condition, not yet expired, and without rust or severe dents.  Health laws also prohibit the distribution of home-canned or home-packaged foods.

Here are some donation suggestions:

  • Canned/shelf-stable tuna
  • Canned meats/stews
  • Soup
  • Canned chili
  • Creamy peanut butter (plastic containers only)
  • Jelly (plastic containers only)
  • Canned fruits/vegetables
  • Packaged meals
  • Breakfast cereal and hot cereal
