Richmond, VA –
Ghosts, goblins, witches, super heroes and a host of other characters descended on the Lotts Conference Center on Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia, Oct. 31.
Even though it was Halloween, they weren’t there to scare, frighten or save the world. They were there to learn and have fun.
Defense Logistics Agency Aviation Commander Air Force Brig. Gen. Linda Hurry kicked off the Warfighter Learn and Reward Day with opening remarks. She said while the festive atmosphere is a great morale builder, the event was more about stepping outside our comfort zones.
“We all have a habit of working in our own work space. This is an opportunity to learn about our DLA Aviation teammates, both military and civilian,” said Hurry.
All four military branches manned booths where they passed out recruiting material, fun, service- related facts, information about current missions and service specific acronyms. The Career Development Office, Customer Focused Intelligence Team, Leadership and Employee Working Groups, Civilian Welfare Fund, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Office, as well as others also manned booths.
This event also featured a costume contest to celebrate the holiday. Robin Dicardo, quality assurance specialist, Aviation Air Frames Division, Supplier Operations Commodities Directorate, took home first prize. He dressed up as the older gentleman in the animated film “Up,” sporting a grey wig, using a cane and carrying a handful of balloons. After the contest, folks assembled to play a “Family Feud” style competition that would make Steve Harvey jealous.
Lorraine Jenkins, chief, Internal Review Office, Command Support Directorate, helped organize the team building event. She echoed Hurry’s sentiments about the event’s importance.
“I think it’s extremely important because it’s a chance to get people together to learn more about what other offices and organizations on center do. It gives everyone a chance to get out of their compact world and walk around, mingle and see what everyone else does. It was a great learning experience. We know what we do, but we don’t know how what we do affects other areas with DLA Aviation. This Learn and Reward Day helped us learn about each other,” she said.
