8th Theater Sustainment Command’s Command Sergeant Major tours DDSP

By Diana Dawa DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Command Sgt. Maj. Jacinto Garza, 8th Theater Sustainment Command’s, Command Sergeant Major, has been in his position at Fort Shafter, Hawaii for just a short time -- seven months.  In his first couple of months on duty there, he toured the Pacific Command Area to get an idea of the common operating picture.

Then it was time to branch further out, which brought him to DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.

“My commanding general was the former CG here (Maj. Gen. Susan Davidson) and she said I had to make this stop to make sure I get the educational piece. Specifically the DLA distribution pieces -- how it functions, how it operates – in order to start putting the pieces of the puzzle together at the strategic level.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Garza had a full day of tours and briefings here, starting with the Eastern Distribution Center, the largest in the world, where he was impressed with the magnitude of the operation.

“You don’t see this picture, (when thinking of how supplies get to soldiers),” said Garza.

“But now, when you’re behind the scenes, and you see the warehouses, the structure, the organization … you see the attention to detail and how everything flows in and out of this distribution center -- it’s amazing.”

During his short stay Garza received numerous presentations and visited additional warehouses – Buildings 80 (Parachute Riggers) and 89 (Foreign Military Sales, Unit Field Management Point, Cold Chain Team), meeting people and learning processes.

Soldiers, family members and civilians are a top priority for Garza and his command. Summing up his visit here at DDSP, Garza noted his impression of the workforce.

“Civilians are part of the Army force and watching them and the attention to detail they provide, and knowing that their providing that service to the warfighter – it’s absolutely phenomenal.“
