Watt selected as Sigonella distribution center deputy

Michael R. Watt has been selected to serve as deputy commander of DLA Distribution Sigonella, Italy.

A native of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, Watt graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography, and received his commission in the summer of 1987. Additionally he graduated from Navy Supply Corps School in May 1988.  He was previously enlisted in the US Navy in 1982 as a Boiler Technician, completing both A and C schools and promoted to an E4 before serving on the USS Vreeland (FF 1068). 

Watt arrived at DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania and was assigned as the west bulk value stream officer in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania from August 2010 to April 2011 and then assumed the East Bulk duties in May 2011 to January 2012.  He assumed duties as the chief of Bulk Distribution Operations at DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania in May 2014.

Previously, Watt served as the issue chief at DLA Distribution Depot Germany from January 2008 to August 2010.  He has served in a multitude of diverse, challenging and varied logistics positions with increasingly responsible leadership positions up to his present 1,400 plus personnel assigned to Distributions Operations, currently in charge of 52 warehouses containing over 980,000 NSN’s, valued at $12 Billion and located in over 1M locations.

Watt’s afloat assignments include serving on USS Petrel (ASR 14) in his first assignment, an Independent Department Head tour directly from Supply Corps School in Charleston, SC, Materiel Officer/Stock Control/Principal Assistant for Logistics on USS George Washington (CVN-73) during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where he served as afloat logistics coordinator while deployed to the 5th and 7th Fleet area of operation.

Watt’s shore tours included: deputy for contracts, Defense Contract Management Area Operations, Orlando, Fl., supply officer, Naval Support Activity Antigua; deputy for logistics, Naval Sea Systems Command Program Executive Office for Surface Combatants at the Washington Naval yard, DC; chief financial officer, Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily; and his last tour prior to retirement as the supply officer at Naval Air Station Key West, Fl.  After retirement, Watt was employed with the Walt Disney Corporation in Orlando, FL as a distribution manager assigned to work Industrial Engineering projects implementing a new Warehouse Controls and management system automating a previously manual process and development of the SOP’s and training plan for the cast members in Distribution.

Furthermore, Watt earned a Master’s Degree in Logistics Management, Inventory Control at Naval Postgraduate School, Monterrey California.  He achieved the highest levels of accreditation in Acquisition, Financial and Supply Chain Management, as well as a member of the Acquisition Professional Community. 

His decorations while on active service include a Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (seven awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star, and various unit citations, campaign medals and service medals.
