Training helps warfighters deal with variety, bulk turn-ins

By Tim Hoyle Disposition Services

Team members at DLA Disposition Service sites are continuing to offer orientation and training whenever they can help make it easier for warfighters to dispose of excess items.

Gimcheon, South Korea, site staff recently gave Camp Humphrey-based Army 602nd Aviation Support Battalion logistics specialists a systemic overview of agency disposal operations for an expected turn in of a wide variety “miscellaneous” items.

Ed Forbes, a disposal service representative at Gimcheon, said these items included “excess maintenance support items such as vehicle parts, air filters, multi-meters for electrical testing, shop equipment tools, and other maintenance support items.” The unit also had scrap metal items consisting of damaged metal bookcases, broken tools, and broken tool boxes, he said.

Subject matter experts at Gimcheon wanted to mitigate any difficulties the unit might have with a large turn in involving so many different types of items. Team member Ki Song Chong said the experts provided soldiers with in-depth tutorials on use of the web-based version of the Federal Logistics Information System known as "WebFLIS;" Federal Logistics Data on Mobile Media, or “FEDLOG;” DLA Disposition Services’ smart books, local stock numbers, documentation protocols, and more.

“Furthermore, they performed a comprehensive inspection of the items,” Chong said. “Measures such as these not only enhance DLA Disposition Services and U.S. Forces Korea’s collaborative efforts but also elevates our credibility within the battlespace.”

Gimcheon’s experts had previously provided similar support to a company with the 302 General Support Aviation Battalion, also at Camp Humphreys, on an impending turn-in of miscellaneous laptops, monitors, tool sets, and more. Chong said the support encompassed a mix of inspections, briefs, tutorials on WEBFLIS and other tools along with a question and answer session to assuage customers’ concerns while affording greater disposal insight.

“Team Gimcheon is aligned with the enterprise’s emphasis on customer engagement and has tailored our process to ensure… an increase in our value as a collaborative partner … and extending and expanding our capabilities,” Chong said.
