Air Force general takes command of DLA Energy

By Irene Smith DLA Energy Public Affairs

Air Force Brig. Gen. Albert Miller took command of Defense Logistics Agency Energy during a ceremony at the McNamara Headquarters Complex, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Sept. 10.

DLA Director Army Lt. Gen. Darrell Williams presided over the ceremony and participated in the time-honored flag passing ceremony where Miller accepted the colors from DLA Energy Acting Commander Guy Beougher before an audience of family, friends, senior leaders and DLA Energy employees.

Williams thanked Beougher for stepping in to serve as DLA Energy’s acting commander since May and noted how instrumental Beougher was in resolving the critical challenges regarding fuel support in the U.S. Central Command region and advancing key reform initiatives including the signing of a fuel support agreement amendment between the U.S. and Bahrain.

Prior to his arrival at DLA Energy, Miller served as the director of CENTCOM’s Deployment and Distribution Operations Center and the deputy director of CENTCOM’s Logistics and Engineering Directorate, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. He oversaw the central logistics hub for all the services, validating all personnel and equipment coming and going through the entire CENTCOM region, including Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan.

“DLA Energy has always been blessed with outstanding leadership and Brig. Gen. Al Miller is no exception,” said Williams. “He’s smart, possesses great leadership and is passionate about his work. In fact, he loves work so much, I’ve heard he keeps a sign on his desk that says ‘Thank God it’s Monday!’”

Miller, who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1992, is an experienced pilot with more than 4,100 flying hours in the C-17 Globemaster, the Air Force’s workhorse transport aircraft; the KC-135 Stratotanker, used to perform the aerial refueling mission; and the C-12 Huron, a small passenger and transport aircraft.

“My personal respect for the mission, performance and impact of DLA Energy just continues to grow,” Williams said. “I say, without hesitation, that the success of our warfighters and other whole of government partners is inextricably linked to the global support you (Energy) provide each and every day.”

Williams praised DLA Energy’s mission success which includes operating from more than 30 locations around the globe procuring more than 81 million barrels of fuel valued at more than $8.5 billion to the warfighter. He cited the DLA Energy workforce for its efforts in processing more than 700 active contracts involving delivery to 4,500 locations using 42 international agreements to enable worldwide contingency operations support.

Attending the ceremony was Robert McMahon, special assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, and Air Force Lt. Gen. Warren Berry, deputy chief of staff for Logistics, Engineering and Force Protection.

“Thank you for your trust in me in leading this outstanding organization,” Miller said. “I am excited to join this amazing team that fuels the force. Together, we will ensure this no-fail mission provides our warfighter with the energy when and where they need it.”
