Americans gathered with family and friends to give thanks last week; however, members of the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime family met with another family to give thanks this season – veterans.

The 13-member group of active duty and retired service members led by the Joint Reserve Force supported the Columbus Veteran Affairs annual Thanksgiving feast for area veterans. The event was held at the American Legion Post 144 on South High Street Nov. 16.

During this event, more than 300 veterans and their family members were provided a meal of turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, noodles, green beans, rolls and salad.

Members of Land and Maritime spent three hours with local veterans, serving their meals and sharing in stories from past and present service. Veterans both young and old let the others know that there are stark differences between the way service members served then and now.

The members expressed how excited they were to give back to those who laid the framework for their service today.

Columbus VA Ambulatory Care Center Director Vivian Hutson was very pleased to have service members present. She mentioned they added an extra special touch to the event, showing the veterans they’re appreciated by the service members who have followed in their footsteps.

Service members said the event brought joy to their hearts and it was great to see so many veterans in such a good place and treated with such great care.

The Joint Reserve Force is already planning their next event with the Veteran Affairs Hospital.
