United States Navy Logistics Specialist 1st Class Peter Henry, DLA Distribution Norfolk, Virginia, leading petty officer, was honored with the DLA Joint Reserve Force Junior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year Award at the 51st annual employee recognition ceremony Dec. 13 for his leadership during Operations Sabre Strike 2018 and Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2018.

DLA director Army Lt. Gen. Darrell Williams, along with Distribution’s commanding officer Navy Supply Corps Rear Adm. Kevin Jones were on hand to present the award at the McNamara Headquarters Complex Auditorium, Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

In his role as leading petty officer for the DLA Expeditionary Distribution Support Unit (EDSU) Norfolk, Henry led the unit’s operations team in analyzing and adjusting work center assignments to match the DLA mission requirements, optimizing available assets to achieve maximum results.  He scheduled and managed operational tasks for over 21 individuals encompassing a total of more than 200 man days of support during the regularly scheduled drill weekends over the fiscal year.  As a result of monthly warehouse operations during drill weekends, DLA Distribution Norfolk, Virginia realized nearly $80,000 in decreased operating expenses.

He also assisted senior leadership with developing operational planning and execution for Sabre Strike 2018. During the operation in Powidz, Poland, Henry served a maximum of 29 days as leading petty officer and assistant leading petty officer, leading 31 sailors’ training directly with their civilian counterparts to set up, maintain and bread down an expeditionary distribution depot in support of multinational forces executing a strategic exercise.

Additionally, Henry volunteered to provide additional support for RIMPAC 2018, serving a total of 48 days during which he led the coordination of manning multiple work sites supporting effective surface vessel and shore facility activities involving the participation of 20 DLA reservists, 26 nations, 47 surface vessels, 5 submarines, 200 aircraft and over 25,000 personnel.

During this time, his team facilitated the combined movement of more than $1.2 million worth of materials ensuring maximum readiness for the ongoing exercises.

According to EDSU Norfolk commander Cmdr. Troy Pugh, Henry is an example of superb leadership and “clearly demonstrates his commitment to providing the best support possible to the entire DLA community.”
