Campaign raises $1.1 million for charity

By Kristin Molinaro DLA Land and Maritime Public Affairs

Federal employees at the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime hit a significant milestone this month. With the conclusion of the latest Combined Federal Campaign season Feb. 22, campaign coordinators reported employee donations totaling $1.1 million over the last six years.

The 2018-2019 campaign drew $117,000 in charitable donations, raising the Central Ohio logistics command’s total giving to about $1,176,700 since 2013.

“The generosity of our federal workers and military service members is staggering,” said Navy Rear Adm. John Palmer, the Defense Supply Center Columbus and DLA Land and Maritime commander. “I couldn’t be more proud for achieving this significant milestone – it truly demonstrates what it means to be a part of a caring community and the DSCC family.”

Employees had several donation options this year. Participants could choose a one-time gift or opt for payroll deductions spread throughout the year. Employees also had the option to pledge volunteer time in addition to monetary donations.

To build momentum early in the campaign, several events were held to increase awareness. DLA Land and Maritime hosted an installation charity fair to bring together potential donors with CFC charities that benefit from donations. Employees were also encouraged to participate in the national #GivingTuesday social media campaign to increase donation pledges during a 24-hour period in November.

Originally set to end in January, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management extended the campaign through February to provide employees additional time to donate. OPM is the lead agency for the annual campaign.

“That additional time proved beneficial,” said DLA Land and Maritime CFC Coordinator Rich Bechand.

Bechand reported that DLA Land and Maritime campaign dollars saw a boost from mid-January to mid-February as more employees pledged support.

ABOUT CFC

The CFC charity drive is one of the world’s largest annual workplace fundraising campaigns with almost 200 CFC campaigns throughout the country and overseas raising millions of dollars each year, according to OPM.

DLA Land and Maritime is a member of the Central Ohio and West Virginia regional CFC. Pledges made by Federal civilian, postal and military donors during the campaign season support eligible non–profit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world. Since its inception, CFC participants have collected more than $8 billion dollars for local, national and international charitable organizations, according to OPM statistics.

For general information on the federal charity drive, visit the official OPM CFC website.

Employees who would like to support CFC charities but missed the donation window still have options to donate on their own by contacting charities directly using the contact information provided in the CFC online giving portal.
