DLA Distribution Navy Reservists Support Saber Guardian 2019 at DLA Distribution Sigonella, Italy

By Dawn Bonsell, DLA Distribution Public Affairs

United States Navy reservists from Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, spent four weeks at DLA Distribution Sigonella, Italy, supporting Saber Guardian 2019, an exercise co-led by Romanian Land Forces and U.S. Army Europe that takes place from June 3-24 at various locations in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. The reservists also assisted with increased workload at DLA Distribution Sigonella, Italy, supporting the massive amount of material on-hand at DDSI to sustain two carrier strike groups in the Mediterranean.

The seven sailors assisted with the high tempo movement of cargo during the exercise intended to test the ability to utilize DDSI as a central hub.
According to Navy Chief Petty Officer, Andrew Hasse, Senior Enlisted Leader, DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, the reservists came together as a DLA Distribution team, hitting the ground running to utilize their civilian and military skills to assist with the many different aspects of Distribution. Sailors integrated with the local DDSI workforce to assist in processing receipts, palletizing materiel and sorting through the hundreds of pallets received to separate material going to many different commands and ships.

The Navy reservists:
• Sorted over 3,400 piece of materiel;
• Processed over 900 documents for shipments;
• Conducted customs inspections on 450 items;
• Picked 395 orders;
• Stowed over 130 pieces of materiel and
• Sorted almost 400 hazardous materials by class/compatibility and Department of Defense activity address codes.

The experience provided valuable training and practical hands on experience to the sailors to be able to support any future mission that may arise.
