CFC giving starts with key workers

By Kimberly Fritz DLA Energy Public Affairs

It takes a team of dedicated volunteers to make the Combined Federal Campaign a success every year.

Defense Logistics Agency Energy’s CFC coordinator, Contract Specialist Armenthia Massey, is leading this year’s 25 DLA Energy volunteers.

She volunteered because it’s a cause close to her heart.

“CFC has been an integral part of my federal career,” Massey said. “I’ve volunteered as a key worker several times and when the request went out for a coordinator, I felt the call to be involved again.”

She wanted to do more than donate to her two favorite charities, Autism Speaks and St. Jude’s.

Autism Speaks Inc. sponsors autism research and conducts awareness and outreach activities aimed at families, governments, and the public. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a pediatric treatment and research facility focused on children's catastrophic diseases, particularly leukemia and other cancers.

“I wanted to roll up my sleeves and do what I could to help,” she said. “The actions of CFC key workers is impactful.”

Each directorate has a designated key worker to help raise awareness and assist federal workers with their CFC questions and donations. The volunteers serve throughout the campaign from Sept. 9 to Jan. 12.

Utility Services Contract Specialist Kristen Wrenn said she enjoys working with CFC because it’s about people and causes that benefit from assistance.

“My favorite charities are those that help children and animals,” she said. “Giving to CFC charities satisfies my own desire to help.”

DLA directorates and McNamara Headquarters Complex tenant agencies are sponsoring a different cause each week of the campaign.

The Energy CFC team hosted an information fair Nov. 25 for the cause of Eradicating Hunger. The event featured prizes, music, refreshments and speakers.

“We reached 650 DLA Energy employees during our Cause Week,” Massey said.

DLA’s 2019 goal is $274,000 and its theme – Grow Our Giving – highlights ambitions to increase the number of participants donating. In the 2018 campaign, just 14.6% of DLA employees in the NCR raised $268,000. The total contribution from DLA and HQC tenant agencies was over half a million dollars.

As of Dec. 2, DLA had reached 44% of its goal, contributing $121,175 to the hundreds of charities included in the CFC.

“DLA Energy employee contributions toward the total goal is approximately $17,000,” Massey said.

Employees can donate by credit card or payroll deduction on a one-time or reoccurring basis at www.cfcgiving.opm.gov. The secure online portal reduces administration costs and errors, and allows users to search for specific charities or view a list of organizations that support specific categories like animal rights, the environment or public safety. Employees can also donate time rather than money by choosing a charity with a hand icon next to it.
