Surplus military tents repurposed as coronavirus testing sites

By Jake Joy DLA Disposition Services Public Affairs

New Jersey’s Union County is using surplus military tents from Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services to aid local COVID-19 testing.

The tents, which were declared excess at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, are being used at a drive-thru test center serving Union County residents.

DLA property disposal specialists made information and photos of the versatile field tents, originally valued at about $10,000 each, available to qualified reuse customers. The lot of 20 tents was distributed to an Army unit at Fort Hood, Texas; Federal Firefighter Program participants; and Law Enforcement Support Office recipients like the Union County Police Department, said Property Disposal Specialist Cindy Anderson.

Excess military tents have also been used for COVID-19 testing throughout the pandemic by customers in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, South Dakota, South Carolina and Indiana.
