The events of September 11th, 2001 are likely to stand out in the minds of everyone who is old enough to remember that tragic day. In Battle Creek, Michigan, employees at the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center paid homage to the victims of those terrorist attacks that took place 20 years ago.

“20 years after that infamous day I ask us to do three things,” said Mike Cannon, the director of Disposition Services. “Remember, honor and educate. It’s our duty as Americans, as Department of Defense employees and as Defense Logistics Agency teammates to do all of these especially on this significant anniversary.”

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation office organized outdoor events for the day to allow for as much participation as possible.

“We wanted to focus on the 20th anniversary,” said the Battle Creek MWR Business Manager Steven Gales, ”So we scheduled an outdoor event giving people the opportunity to reflect on their remembrance of the event. We followed that up by partnering with our fitness center to do a 5K run/walk. Participation was really good for the run and some people are actually doing it virtually as well.”

For those present, it was an opportunity to show appreciation for all who served and those still serving to defend our nation.

When asked what prompted him to participate in the day’s events, Andrew P. Van Koevering, of Disposition Services command support team responded by saying, “Motivation to continue to honor those lost and those that continue to live today that served. Anything that I can do to reflect that gratitude, I will do.”
