Can you tell us about yourself? I am a very positive outgoing person. I strive to do everything to the best of my ability.
Describe your job in a sentence or two. What do you do specifically? In this position my biggest responsibility is to keep the Area Manager informed of the site financial standing. Process all financial documents to include monthly site supply orders.
How long have you worked for the federal government including military service? I have only been with DLA for 2 years, but I have been with the Federal government for a total of 17 years. I do not have any prior military service, my father served 25 years in the Army, so I knew that was not going to be the career choice for me!
What is your favorite memory with DLA Disposition Services? My favorite memory of DLA so far would be when Mr. Cannon came for a visit, and I was presented with DLA coin.
What aspect(s) of your current job gives you the most personal satisfaction and why? It gives me great satisfaction to know I am doing a good job. I can sometimes be a bit competitive, so I know my goal is always to do a better job than the person I am replacing. I have no doubt in my mind that Barb is satisfied with the level of professionalism, and the quality of work I have done so far.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you? The best piece of advice I have received is to not take everything so personal. It is a challenge with the training method is trial and error, and I take it so personal when I make an error or when the process changes and I must redo something.
What kind(s) of training and education helps your work performance in your current role? The training I received while earning my DOD Financial Management Certification was the most beneficial training, I have received prior to accepting this position. It gave me a better understanding government finance. My current position involves more than just the financial, but I feel the financial is the most important.
Where do you see yourself five years from now? I can see myself holding my current position for more than 5 years from now. I am truly happy with my position and have no desire to change.
Tell us something that most people might not know about you or your directorate? Most people don’t know that I was an over-the-road truck driver. I was raised right here in Killeen, Texas so when I was 25, I went to truck driving school and learned to drive 18-wheel trucks.
What was your first job? My first driving job was with Steven’s Transport out of Dallas, Texas. For the next 15 years I was able to travel to the lower 48 states and Canada. While I enjoyed traveling around when it was time for my first grandchild to be born, I knew it was time to stay home. Thanks to my accident-free driving record I was able to qualify for my first government job at the Recycle Center as a dumpster truck driver. It took 3 years of driving before I was offered my first office job. I worked at the Recycle center for a total of 10 years. During that time, I earned my associate degree and began learning more about the financial aspect of the government.
Name your favorite/recent book(s) you have read. I am a very avid reader and will read anything I can get my hands on. To show the wide spectrum of different types of books I enjoy, the last two books I have competed were Karen Kingsbury – Even Now and Kel Carpenter – Queen of the Damned. My personal goal has been to read at least one book a month.
What are some of your passions outside of work? Papercrafts; I love to scrapbook and make greeting cards. I have struggled lately to keep up with family birthdays and holidays to make cards for anyone outside of my family. I have planners that I have turned into scrapbooks to mark special days in my life for the last five years.
What is your favorite quote? Habits – It is often said that the secret to our success is hidden within our daily routines. For all “big” things are really just the sum of a million “little” things done consistently, done diligently over time. And how beautiful is it to know that we have the power to create our reality one short day at a time. One simple choice at a time. One sweet thought at a time. So tell me now, Can you see how your habits are creating your reality today?
What’s the most thrilling/adventurous thing you have ever done? The most thrilling or adventurous think I have done in the last couple of years is learn how to ride a motorcycle. I have had many ups and downs with learning to ride, but I am not ready to give up and hope to one day have my own motorcycle and able to go on rides with my husband.
