April Prepareathon week #2: mass communication systems and celebrating telecommunicator week

By Rick Zucchero, installation emergency manager, DLA Installation Management Susquehanna

In week one we discussed common severe spring weather events for the central Pennsylvania area and the difference between a tornado watch and a warning. This week we want to make sure you can receive timely messages to prepare for and take immediate life-saving actions during an event.

Have you ever felt like you were the last to know?  I’m sure at one point or another, all of us had an experience like that. Fortunately, thanks to the substantial advancements in technology, there are many ways to receive timely notifications to prepare us for an event or facilitate immediate protective actions.

Know Your Alerts and Warnings

Defense Logistics Agency’s Mass Warning Notification System is designed to provide notifications through multiple delivery systems such as the building public address systems and outdoor speakers. Additionally, the software application AtHoc is used to provide messages through government computers and phones, as well as personal phones.

You control your method of delivery such as text messaging, or voice notification via government and/or personal phones, email and the new AtHoc mobile APP!  We encourage everyone to sign up for AtHoc messaging as Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna may utilize AtHoc for events like:

  • Flooding – requires temporary use of alternative Access Control Point
  • Severe weather – facilitates delayed opening, early dismissal, or closing of installation as well as reopening
  • Accident or incident near the installation involving a hazardous material spill resulting in an evacuation or shelter-in-place order
  • Terrorist threat or activity requiring an installation lockdown

For more information see the attached flyers on receiving alerts and warnings, updating your AtHoc contact information and getting the AtHoc mobile APP!

Telecommunicator week

Of course, none of this timely and vital communication could take place without our Emergency Communication dispatchers!  This week is a time to celebrate and thank emergency service dispatchers across the nation who remain at the ready 24/7/365. The dedicated professionals assigned to Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna are always ready to execute routine or emergency support for the installation and local community.
