Cherry Point employees become certified life-savers

By Leon Moore, Acting Chief of Public Affairs DLA Aviation Public Affairs Office

Close to 25 Defense Logistics Agency Aviation at Cherry Point employees took part in basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator training sessions conducted by an American Safety and Health Institute certified trainer at Fleet Readiness Center East on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina Mar. 27, and Mar. 30.

DLA Aviation at Cherry Point Officer-in-Charge Navy Cmdr. David Odom said the reasoning behind offering the CPR/AED-familiarization course was due to a series of medical emergencies and related incidents at FRC East where response was impacted or delayed by a lack of CPR and AED trained employees.

Odom said the training was presented in multiple sessions to allow Aviation employees to schedule around mission essential tasks and everyone who participated became CPR/AED certified.

Customer Support Specialist Devon LeCointe was one of those who attended the training and is now certified in life saving procedures. He works within DLA Aviation at Cherry Point’s Material Management Division.

He said he now feels better prepared to help in case a medical emergency arises in the workplace or at home.

“This was something I wanted to not only be able to help my coworkers, but also to be able to help my family as well,” he said.
