TRACY, Calif. –
Members of Defense Logistics Agency Distribution San Joaquin, California, came together to pay heartfelt tribute to employees who lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic in a ceremony Aug. 18, at the DDJC installation in Tracy, California.
During the event, Chaplain, Army Capt. Terri Sykes provided an invocation and Marine Corps Col. Kevin Chunn, the commander of DDJC, led the proceedings with a speech that resonated with the attendees.
"Today we gather here with heavy hearts to remember and honor six remarkable individuals who weren't just employees, but also cherished members of our extended family," Chunn said. “We pay tribute to the moments they shared, the laughter they brought, and the contributions they made – not only in our professional endeavors but also in the countless connections they formed with those around them.
As he spoke, the families of those who had succumbed to the virus stood united in their grief, finding solace in the collective embrace of their DDJC colleagues. The event was marked by the unveiling of a monument honoring the fallen heroes, who not only contributed to the mission but also held a special place within the DDJC family.
The names of the fallen were etched onto the monument:
Kathleen Reyes
Hector Cornejo
Marshall Avalos
Justo Olaya
Michael Chin
Dale Jackson
Each name symbolized a life dedicated to their work, their families and friends, and the greater cause of serving warfighters across the globe.
"These six individuals stood tall and worked hard for their families and for the warfighters across the globe," Chunn said, acknowledging the significance of their contributions and sacrifice.
The ceremony was not only a remembrance of their professional dedication but also a celebration of their human qualities that endeared them to those who had the privilege of knowing them.
“As we remember Kathleen, let us reflect on the power of compassion and the importance of creating the sense of care and trust, wherever we go,” Chunn said. “Let her dedication to her team, her family, and our mission remind us of the profound impact that a supportive and caring presence can have on those around us.”
“As we remember Hector, let us reflect on the impact of his welcoming nature, and his dedication to helping others,” Chunn said. “Let his legacy inspire us to carry forward his spirit of kindness, creating an environment where everyone feels accepted and supported.”
“As we remember Marshall, may we embody the qualities that he so greatly embodied, a passion for excellence and the ability to lead with kindness and integrity.” Chunn said. “Let us honor Marshall’s memory by continuing to strive for greatness and inspiring those around us to do the same.”
“As we remember Justo, let us honor him by carrying his commitment to those around him with us,” Chunn said. “His spirit lives on in the values he shared and instilled in us and let his passion for his family and those around him guide us forward.”
“As we remember Dale, let us also carry forward his legacy of spreading joy. Let us remember the impact that a simple smile and a touch of humor can have on our lives and the lives of others,” Chunn said. “In our own unique ways, may we hope to bring a little bit of the same light that Dale shared with us into the world.”
“As we continue our own paths, may we honor Michael by approaching life with the same dedication, enthusiasm, and love that he so incredibly exemplified,” Chunn said. “Let his love and passion inspire us to embrace our own passions and find pride in our own journeys.”
Chunn concluded his speech with a heartfelt reflection on the enduring impact of those who were lost. "Let us remember that while we mourn their passing, their spirit lives on in the indomitable heart of our organization and in the lives they've touched," he said. "As we continue forward, let us carry their memory with us, and this monument that will remain here forever will ensure that their contributions are never forgotten and that their legacy serves as a guiding light for us all."
The unveiling of the memorial monument marked a significant moment of closure and remembrance for the DDJC community. As the names of the fallen heroes are etched on the monument, their memory will serve as a constant reminder of the resilience, dedication, and unity that define DDJC.
