RICHMOND, Va. –
PrepareAthon! Day - Are you ready for an emergency?
By Julio A. Clavell, Installation Emergency Manager, Security & Emergency Services
Disasters and emergencies can strike at any time, whether it's a power outage, natural disaster, or something more serious. That's why America's PrepareAthon! Day, set for April 30, 2025, is the perfect time to test disaster readiness.
While at the workplace, it's essential to be aware of the Occupant Emergency Plan (OEP). Every building should have this vital resource that outlines critical information and what to do in a crisis, that includes:
- Individual's Role: Specific actions individuals need to take during an emergency.
- Supervisor's Role: Review the OEP twice a year with employees.
- Evacuation Routes: Safe paths to exit the building and designated assembly points.
- Shelter Locations: Where to go for protection and what to do when taking shelter.
- Lockdown Procedures: Understanding RUN, HIDE and FIGHT protocols for active threats.
- Emergency Contacts: Quick access to numbers for fire, police
, and medical assistance.
- Weather Events: Procedures for handling natural disasters and severe weather.
Don't Just Check the Boxes. Reviewing OEP annually is mandatory, but don't stop there. Try these efforts to be prepared:
- Practice Makes Perfect: Conduct drills to familiarize yourself with evacuation routes, muster points
, and other emergency procedures.
- Be a Leader: Help visitors understand safety protocols – their safety is your responsibility too.
