PaCER recent graduate spotlight: Andrea Schneck

By DLA Land and Maritime PaCE program

Andrea Schneck is a recent graduate of the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime Pathways to Career Excellence program. She began her PaCE journey in June of 2023 and graduated on June 20 as a post-award contract specialist.

Why did you first apply to the PaCE program?  Having family and friends in the military, I wanted to be part of the mission and serve the nation in some capacity. I was looking for a new career that would be challenging and rewarding while still maintaining a robust work-life balance.

What was your favorite part(s) of the PaCE program? I enjoy learning new things and networking with colleagues. As someone who is new to civil service, it’s nice to have others who are in the same position and on the same journey as me. I’m fortunate to have met great people who have turned into lifelong friends.

Can you share an example of how you’re helping the warfighter? I support the Maritime Supplier Operations directorate in the post-award contracting section. An essential duty as a contract specialist is to resolve post-award contracting issues, some which may cause delayed performance and negative impacts for our military customers. I also ensure that contract requirements are met to maintain the integrity of the military supply chain.

What would you say is the most important quality to succeed in the PaCE program? Communication is imperative in this position. With so many complexities and changes continuously occurring, communication is the key skill to perform. To communicate well, you must have strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. It’s so important to communicate effectively with all the different entities.

In your own words, how would you describe the PaCE program, and what can you gain from it to someone interested in applying? The PaCE program provides the foundation to begin your contracting career. You will gain valuable tools, experience and knowledge to build further and create the career you desire.

What advice do you have for current PaCERs? I would encourage PaCERs to be a sponge and absorb all the information you can. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and step out of your comfort zone. Never forget the “why” of what you do. Supporting the warfighters is so important and they rely on us. Take pride in the work you do!

Editorial Note: DLA Land and Maritime’s Pathways to Career Excellence Program is a two-year program based in Columbus, Ohio, that provides a structured career path with formal training, on-the-job assignments, cross-training and rotational assignments. PaCERs begin as general schedule 7s and can advance to GS-11or GS-12 upon completion. There are multiple pathways to becoming a PaCER, including being hired internally, as a recent graduate or from military service. For more information, visit www.dla.mil/Careers/PaCE/.
