NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. –
Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Norfolk, Virginia has completed the annual replenishment of Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, a vital component of the National Defense Strategy.
“Operation PACER GOOSE underscores the vital role of the joint logistics in sustaining one of our nation’s most remote outposts,” said Navy Capt. Eric Lockett, commander, DLA Distribution Norfolk, Virginia. “The dedication and precision of our team and logistics partners ensure Pituffik Space Base remains mission-ready to defend the homeland and advance global security.”
Annually, DLA Distribution Norfolk, Virginia conducts a resupply mission to Pituffik Space Base through a concentrated effort of the entire DLA enterprise and the U.S. Navy. The base, the northern most outpost in the Department of War, has a deep water port that is blocked by ice for nine months out of the year. In addition to a resupply part of the mission is to return with empty containers and scrap accumulated over the year.
Given the austere environment and the critical mission of Pituffik Space Base, Operation PACER GOOSE is a critical sustainment effort that originates out of Norfolk Naval Base every year. Replenishment opportunities are limited and critical making the organic material movement capabilities of DLA Distribution an essential operation.
“Working together with experienced ground guides and equipment operators throughout the operation made for a safe and successfully completed mission with zero incidents or accidents,” said Otis Moore, stevedore supervisor.
Resupply efforts are essential to maintain operations at Pituffik Space Base where missions include missile warning, missile defense, space surveillance, and satellite command and control.
Employees at DLA Distribution Norfolk, Virginia conducted 80 crane lifts to move over 4.5 million tons of critical material.
