DLA collects more than a ton of food for Richmond-area families

By Pamela Smith DLA Weapons Support (Richmond) Public Affairs Office

Employees from the DLA Weapons Support (Richmond) Supplier Operations (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Directorate came together in October for their annual canned food drive, channeling their teamwork in support of local families.

“This was the most direct and impactful way to contribute to the community,” said event coordinator Malinda Hargrove-Miller, who partnered with Victoria Mosley, both of Supplier Operations (OEM). “Participation was inspired by our desire to show our commitment to the local community, with the usual friendly competition for added fun.”

Travis Beasley, Director of Supplier Operations (OEM), recalled the atmosphere during the effort: "People were genuinely excited to contribute and actively encourage their colleagues to participate. There was a noticeable increase in positive energy throughout the directorate, fostering a sense of teamwork and shared purpose while strengthening our connection to the local community."

That shared sense of purpose was evident during the delivery to the Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center.

"We contacted the food bank to let them know about our donation; but they weren’t prepared for the sheer volume of goods," Hargrove-Miller recalled, “and their surprise grew as our deliveries continued.”

In total, the team collected 2,145 canned goods and other nonperishable items, amounting to 2,126 pounds – more than a ton – of food. Pam Harmison, the food bank's donor relations coordinator, extended her thanks for the positive difference the donation made for vulnerable families facing food insecurity and uncertainty.

"The generosity and enthusiasm displayed were truly inspiring,” Beasley said, reflecting on the event, “and we will continue to participate in opportunities that foster teamwork and shared purpose and a stronger connection to our local community.”
