BATTLE CREEK, Mich. –
Federal News Network recently interviewed Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services Director Mike Cannon for its “Federal Insights” program to hear about data-driven improvements to DLA's excess property turn-in and reuse mission.
Part of the organization’s ongoing effort to increase property reuse by military units includes promoting the adoption of Electronic Turn-In Documents, or ETIDs, as opposed to troops relying on actual paper documents when handing their used and excess property over to DLA. Using ETIDs not only helps eliminate human error, but also quickly allows DLA to let reuse customers know that critical items they have expressed interest in will soon be available.
During the FNN interview, Cannon explained the end-state goal, saying “…If I know the things they need and I can find them, we’ll change how we handle property,” he said. “Right now, everything is first in, first out. Once we get this rolling, we’re going to set up a high priority system, where if one of those items that shows up on that ETID, it skips the queue and goes to the front of the line, and then we immediately process it. And rather than taking our time and putting on the shelf, we take it straight from receiving over to outbound and get it moving same day or next day to the unit that needs it.”
