DLA Columbus kicks off 2015 CFC season

By Michael Molinaro DLA Land and Maritime Public Affairs

Associates from DLA Land and Maritime gathered in the Building 20 auditorium Sept. 10 to ready for a new season of giving as part of the Central Ohio and West Virginia Combined Federal Campaign kickoff.

Led by Navy Rear Adm. John King, Land and Maritime commander, associates were encouraged to do their part in this year’s campaign and help the organization meet or exceed the goal of $253,000.

“Our theme this year is ‘Connect…Stronger Together’ and I think it lays a solid foundation for a very successful campaign,” King said. “It paints a picture for how much we need each other to make this whole thing work.”

CFC is the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, with almost 200 CFC campaigns throughout the country and overseas raising millions of dollars each year. Pledges made by Federal civilian, postal and military donors during the campaign season (Sept. 1 to Dec. 15) support eligible non-profit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world.

Last year was a monumental year for the Central Ohio and West Virginia CFC as it was presented with a national performance award for exceeding their goal by one of the largest percentages as well as having so many agencies that met the triple goal of donor, dollars and average, said Janet Bunnell, CFC coordinator.  DLA Land and Maritime alone raised $264,000 and exceeded its goal by three percent.

To get things going in the right direction, Land and Maritime held its first fundraiser during the event with a “Change for Change” fundraiser. Attendees brought in their loose change to demonstrate that every cent counts and that “when we connect, we are stronger together,” Bunnell said. Within minutes, Land and Maritime collected $256.94.

“There are so many worthy causes and charities that are powered by generous donations,” Bunnell said. “In fact, I’d be willing to bet that each of us has been helped by, or know someone who has been helped by, one of the many local, national or international charities listed.”

Bunnell introduced the CFC captains and key workers before King signed the first pledge sheet and showed associates various ways to contribute, including through a mypay deduction or online.

For more information on CFC and how to donate, associates are encouraged to talk to a captain or key worker located in their office, or go to the Central Ohio and West Virginia regional CFC website.
