Employees surpass annual food drive goal fourth year in a row

By Mikia Muhammad DLA Troop Support Public Affairs

Exceeding its Feds Feed Families collection goal is becoming an annual tradition for Defense Logistics Agency Philadelphia, as its employees have done so for the past four years.
This year, employees from DLA Troop Support, Installation Services, Information Operations and Document Services donated nearly 200 pounds beyond its 3,000-pound goal, Janeen Hayes, DLA Troop Support’s community relations lead, said.

Collected donations were delivered Sept.15 to Philabundance, the Philadelphia region’s largest hunger relief organization.

“The goal of Philabundance is to feed families that are less fortunate than we are (and) my goal every day is to help them do that,” Heather Weindel, Philabundance inventory control manager, said.

Weindel explained that every donation made throughout the year, regardless of size, helps feed local families.

“People tend to donate more around the [winter] holidays, but really we need that (support) all year-round, because people are hungry all year-round,” Weindel said.

DLA Installation Services employees Roscoe Meyers and Daryl Fuller helped deliver and unload donations to one of Philabundance’s drop-off centers.

“It’s an honor to be able to help out,” Fuller said.

From early June to late August, employees donated canned vegetables, boxes of pasta, cereal and other nonperishable food items in support of the drive.

Feds Feed Families is an Office of Personnel Management-sponsored program that requests Department of Defense employees donate food items to their respective local food banks.
