PHILADELPHIA –
The Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support celebrated the Navy’s 241st birthday and the service’s tradition, pride and core values after a senior leader staff meeting Oct. 11.
“We get to honor those who have served before us and at the same time, celebrate the future that comes from serving in the Navy and this great country,” said Navy Lt. Cdr. A.J. Luna, who works in the Construction and Equipment supply chain.
The official date for the Navy birthday is Oct. 13. Prior to the meeting, videos of the “CNO's 2016 Navy Birthday Message” and “U.S. Navy 241st Birthday video celebration!!” were played.
As part of the tradition in celebrating the Navy’s birthday, the oldest and youngest sailors at DLA Troop Support cut the birthday cake. The privilege was given to Navy Capt. Daniel Hodgson, Construction and Equipment director, and Lt. Dartanyon King, Subsistence contract specialist.
“To be a part of it (Navy birthday) means everything to me because my dad was also in the Navy. So just continuing the legacy of the Navy makes me excited,” said King.
According to the Naval History and Heritage Command, the Navy was formed after the Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia voted to send two armed vessels to tour and intercept transports carrying munitions to the British Army in America.
