PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii –
Defense Logistics Agency Maritime Pearl Harbor associates, along with friends and family, offer their time and services each month at volunteer events island-wide to give back to the community.
Previous events have included participation in the 27th Annual Food Drive, where monetary donations were collected and donated canned goods were received, sorted, boxed, and prepared for shipment to the Hawaii Food Bank Warehouse; the Malama Maunalua’s Community Huki Program, where invasive alien algae were removed from Maunalua Bay as a restoration measure; as well as the 2016 State Special Olympics Summer Games, at which volunteers escorted and assisted competitors through Healthy Athlete screenings.
The most recent event took place Oct. 1, where associates, friends, and family volunteered their time and service with 808 Cleanups, participating in the Lili’uokalani Botanical Garden Stream Cleanup. 808 Cleanups is an environmental nonprofit organization committed to restoring Hawaii’s beauty and habitats through beach, hiking, graffiti, and marine debris cleanups, to promote a safe and clean environment.
Environmental restoration and preservation is essential in Hawaii due to the multitude of outdoor activities available, as well as the abundance of wildlife that calls the islands home. Volunteers collected and removed 450 pounds of rubbish, metal, and glass from the garden and stream.
The community and environment throughout Hawaii are able to thrive, in large part due to the help of generous volunteers. DLA Maritime Pearl Harbor is proud to have the opportunity to make the world a safer, healthier, and better place.
“Staying active in the community is an important trait of being a leader,” says Michael McCurty, DLA Maritime Pearl Harbor’s volunteer coordinator. “It also offers the chance to give something back to the community and make a difference.”
