The guest speaker at the annual American Indian Alaskan Native Month observance Dec. 1 talked about the importance of developing future Native American leaders.
Mary Phillips, a member of the Laguna Pueblo Tribe of New Mexico and Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, addressed Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support and Naval Support Activity Philadelphia employees. Her work includes advocacy and research for Native American community development, youth and mental health services.
“The core of Native American leadership and succession planning for tribal nations are Native American youth who make up our pipeline for emerging leaders,” Phillips said.

In his proclamation for National Native American Heritage Month, President Barack Obama wrote that Native Americans helped inspire some of the basic ideals of America.
“As the first to live on this land, Native Americans and their traditions and values inspired – and continue to inspire – the ideals of self-governance and determination that are the framework of our nation,” Obama wrote. “This month, we recognize the contributions made by Native Americans since long before our founding.”
