Question: Is the Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code and part number (PN) stock listed?
If Yes:
Requisition existing National Stock Number (NSN) from service supply system.
If No:
Base/Unit supply section submits a DD Form 1348-6 requisition using the manufacturer’s CAGE & PN
Question: Would the Base/Unit purchasing authority like to do a local purchase?
If Yes:
An NSN is not always necessary for acquisition, though it can make it easier for a unit to order. Ordering using MILSTRIP may take higher authority and can cause delays. A unit can also do a one-time buy for an item or set up a revolving contract with a vendor to fulfill requirements.
Note: As an alternative to establishing an NSN for materials, vendors can upload their items to FedMall for ease of buying with unit issued government purchase cards.
If No:
The Base/Unit authority will forward the CAGE & PN requisition to their service logistics command.
Question: Does the military service deem an NSN is necessary?
If Yes:
Military Service logistics command sends the cataloging request for the NSN assignment to Logistics Information Services.
If No:
The item will not have an NSN assigned. Contact your logistics command
