Dinis L. Pimentel

CAPT, U.S. Navy Chief of Staff, DLA Land and Maritime

Captain Dinis Pimentel is Chief of Staff at the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime located in Columbus, Ohio. He serves as a principal advisor to the Commander and Deputy Commander on operations and readiness matters. In this role, he helps lead 2,500 joint military and civilian professionals in delivering repair parts to all military services at 37 worldwide locations to include three DLA Depot Level Reparable detachments, four detachments supporting U.S. Naval Shipyards and at deployed units. DLA Land and Maritime’s core functions include purchasing materiel, monitoring inventory levels, maintaining technical data and assuring quality conformance of approximately two million spare and repair parts used by more than 19,000 military units and federal and civilian agencies.

Pimentel hails from Hudson, Massachusetts, and is a 1992 graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He reported to the USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) and deployed to the Western and Northern Atlantic during expeditionary tasking. He qualified in Submarines and as a Nuclear Engineer Officer. In April of 1997, Pimentel reported to the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut for duty as an instructor in the officer curriculum.

He accepted a commission in the Navy Reserve in July of 2002 and affiliated with the Strike Group Operations Detachment C in Groton, Connecticut as the Assistant Training Officer and Manpower Officer. In 2005, he was selected as the Program Manager for the Submarine Force Atlantic Pre-Deployment Exercise Training program. He served as the Executive Officer of Naval Submarine Support Center Detachment 101, of New London, Connecticut, from 2007-2008. In his next assignment, he assumed Command of Navy Reserve NATO Deployable Joint Task Force Support Group, in Atlanta, Georgia. During this tour, he was mobilized to U.S. Forces – Iraq, J35P Force Protection, for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. He served as Deputy Commander of Biometric Operations in Iraq with III Corps and 18th Airborne Corps and he was also the Deputy for Biometrics in U.S. Division – North, collocated with 3rd Division.

After the mobilization, he returned to his roots as Executive Officer for Undersea Warfare Operations Detachment -- Groton, Connecticut. In December of 2011, he assumed Command of Undersea Warfare Operations Detachment – Orlando, Florida, where he also led the Submarine Force Eastern Region Mentoring Program and led creation and development of the Undersea Warfare Strike Group Anti-Submarine Warfare Program to augment surge needs of the Sea Combatant Commanders.

In December of 2013, he shifted back to Force Protection to Command Detachment One of Submarine Group Ten providing armed physical force protection for submarine activity. Following a one-year tour with the Navy Reserve U.S. European Command's J3 Plans and Operations Center, he commanded the Navy Reserve Undersea Rescue Headquarters from December of 2016 to November of 2018 where he served during the search and rescue efforts for the Argentine submarine ARA San Juan as the Deputy Commander of CTG 46 in Argentina with operational control of eight at-sea search and rescue ships. In his most recent assignment, Pimentel served as the commanding officer for Navy Reserve, Commander Naval Forces Japan Headquarters.

His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and campaign awards. He holds a Master's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer, and is a fully qualified joint officer.
