Sasebo detachment employees assist local community in cleanup efforts

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Teaming up with local volunteers from Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo, employees from Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Yokosuka, Japan’s, Sasebo detachment assisted the Tawaraga-Uro Cho community in cleanup and maintenance efforts in the area.

"It is part of our cultural commitment to the communities we serve in to give back to them,” said Roy Jewell, deputy commander of DLA Distribution Yokosuka.  “These gestures of friendship and unity of effort not only solidify support for the base, but develop personal relationships that go beyond U.S. and Japanese ties."

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Juliber Fernandez, military liaison at Sasebo, organized the group’s efforts.  Throughout the day, volunteers completed road and trail maintenance, put up bags along a track, and picked onions.  “Both groups worked together to promote a clean environment and camaraderie,” said Fernandez.  “Our day concluded with locals serving lunch as a gesture of thanks for supporting their community.”

"Petty Officer Fernandez's contributions were in support of a larger effort by Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo to create an international culture of respect for not just the environment, but for the people of Sasebo," said Jewell.
