COLUMBUS, Ohio –
The Defense Supply Center Columbus hosted an art competition that doubled as a food drive Aug. 3 – 9.
DSCC participates in the Feds Feed Families campaign every summer in order to provide food to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank during a period of time when donations are often low. (Donations accepted through Aug. 31)
“Even as the economy grows stronger, there are still too many people struggling to put food on the table. Our goal is to assist as many families within the community as possible,” said DLA Land and Maritime Commander and DSCC Navy Rear Adm. Michelle Skubic.
In addition to the FFF drop-off locations, the can art project known as “The Build” is another way associates give back to the community while having fun.
The event was established by DFAS co-coordinators Daniel Faltermaier and Misty Wyatt in 2014.
This year marked the second annual competition between associates at DLA Land and Maritime and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.
“The goal of the build competition was to generate additional food donations to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank through our FFF campaign. With associates participating in the can building contest and others coming in to vote for the structures, we were able to generate thousands more in donations to the cause,” said Kristin Molinaro, DLA Land and Maritime FFF coordinator.
This year, 11 teams participated in the competition resulting in structures built with over 3,000 pounds of food donations.
A change to this year’s Build was the judging. All associates were encouraged to participate and could exchange non-perishable items for tickets to cast their vote for the best in three categories: customer spotlight, American landmark and most creative.
“This was a great way to support the cause and increase food donations, making a significant contribution to the overall campaign,” Wyatt said.
The voting resulted in an additional 2,209 pounds of food contributions for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
Overall, the competition raised 5,499 pounds in food donations to assist in Ohio’s fight against hunger.
“We were grateful for everyone that came out and supported the Build event from the teams that constructed the art to the associates that voted. We saw a lot of creativity in the structures and appreciated all the support for the campaign,” Molinaro said.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
The FFF campaign has been extended through Aug. 31.
Associates can bring non-perishable food items and place them into designated collection boxes located throughout work areas or bring them directly to the food donation truck in front of building 20 in the north overflow lot near the corner of 17th and Pershing Ave. Collection times are Wednesdays from 6 – 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. during the campaign.
