DLA employees, Airmen share life lessons during Eastmoor career event

By MSgt Brian Swayne DLA Land and Maritime Public Affairs Liaison

Two reserve Airmen working for the Defense Logistics Agency spoke to student-athletes from the Eastmoor Academy girls’ basketball team March 3 on the academy’s campus in east Columbus.

Air Force Master Sgt. Matthew Smith and Air Force Master Sgt. Brian Swayne spoke at length on their current roles in the reserves and covered topics including overcoming obstacles, perseverance and meeting challenges. Following their presentations, the reservists hosted a question and answer feedback session with the team.

Smith works as a demand/supply chain analyst for DLA Land and Maritime and Swayne is a property disposal specialist for DLA Disposition Services, both based at the Defense Supply Center Columbus.

The half-day event was sponsored by the “I Know I Can” program and also featured a breakfast and presentations from community representatives.

Eastmoor Academy head coach Charity Martin-King, a representative of Columbus’ “I Know I Can” program, organized the event for the student-athletes.

The “I Know I Can” program was founded in 1988 by a group of local community and civic leaders to provide Columbus-area high school graduates with information and assistance in planning their secondary education. Since its inception, the program has awarded more than 22,000 grants to Columbus City School graduates.
