EMS Strong: Stronger Together

By Paul Alexander DLA Columbus Fire and Emergency Services

May 20 – 26, 2018, is Emergency Medical Services Week.

EMS week was first nationally recognized in 1974 when President Gerald R. Ford signed the Emergency Medical Services Systems bill.

This year the emphasis is on the theme “Stronger Together.”

The Defense Supply Center Columbus recognizes the critical roles EMS has not only for day to day emergencies but also in a regional and national level. When a disaster strikes EMS responders have to deal with some of the toughest and most horrific scenarios in order to provide the care and services to those affected by the crisis.

DLA Columbus Fire and Emergency Services offers Advanced Life Support to not only the associates and visitors to the Defense Supply Center Columbus, but also to the community surrounding DSCC through a mutual aid agreement.

DLA Columbus Fire and Emergency Services responds to an average of 340 medical calls each year with their 15 paramedics and 11 basic emergency medical technicians.

Providing EMS to the community requires the members to receive constant training. In 2017 DLA Columbus Fire and Emergency Services received more than 3,000 hours of training to maintain their proficiency.

This year DLA Columbus Fire and Emergency Services has planned a number of activities. These include training and reviews from previous call to visiting the Child Development Center (CDC). The CDC visit is one of the highlights, as familiarizing the children with an ambulance and the EMS providers helps provide them comfort should they experience a medical emergency and have to be given care.
