Event puts creative spin on domestic violence awareness

By Natalie Skelton DLA Aviation Public Affairs Office

Come out and break a sweat while bringing awareness to the issue of domestic violence at this year’s Spin for the Cause/Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence. A joint venture between Defense Logistics Agency Installation Operations Richmond and the U.S. Army Reserve 80th Training Command, Spin for the Cause encourages physical and mental fitness to help overcome obstacles and gain empowerment.

“When we increase awareness about domestic violence, we decrease the shame associated,” said Africa Miller, family advocacy program manager and social worker, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Office, DLA Installation Operations Richmond. “Shame makes it difficult to discuss domestic violence, seek help and reach out to others for support.”

Spin for the Cause/Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence kicked off on Oct. 3, when 25 soldiers from the 80th Training Command cheered each other on during a rousing spin session. Local agencies such as women’s shelters and domestic violence centers were also on-site to provide resources and information.

Miller said the Family Advocacy Program provides confidential support and appropriate referrals based on the unique needs of those that experience domestic violence. “Referrals may be in the form of medical and mental health care, emergency shelter, financial resources and more,” she said.

Francis Mitchell, family programs coordinator, U.S. Army Reserve 80th Training Command says the Family Programs provide education, confidential support and referral services to multiple agencies throughout the community. Mitchell said, “Our military community needs to know that Family Programs [Fort Family Outreach Support Center] is available 24/7/365 for all of our service members regardless of their geographic location at 1-844-ONE FAMY.”

Spin for the Cause sessions will be held from 11:30 a.m. – noon each Wednesday through the end of the month — Oct. 10, 17, and 24 — in the blue room of the Red Brick Fitness Center (Bldg. 33-D Bay). No reservation is required; however, space is limited so seats are first come, first served.
