NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. –
To honor the United States Navy’s 243rd birthday, DLA Distribution employees gathered together in the Distribution Headquarters lobby on Oct. 17.
Opening the celebration, DLA Distribution’s commanding officer Navy Rear. Adm. Kevin M. Jones thanked the Distribution workforce for allowing the event to be delayed to allow for him to be in attendance.
Jones recounted how the Navy began during the Revolutionary War, “In October 1775, Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island spoke before the Continental Congress in Philadelphia and introduced a resolution calling for ‘the building and equipping of an American fleet as soon as possible.’”
In closing, Jones thanked all of the organization’s active, reserve and retired Navy sailors, and invited them forward to help cut the ceremonial cake.
