Jacksonville distribution team tours local Amazon Distribution Center

DLA Distribution Public Affairs

On October 18 the DLA Distribution Jacksonville, Florida team toured their local Amazon Distribution Center. The purpose of the visit was to gain innovative ideas related to distribution operations being performed at a non-government distribution center.

“This was a great opportunity for a team building and professional development event that exposed our entire team to a world class operation that is deemed very successful in a profit driven environment,” explained Jacksonville director Charlie Crumb. “I thought it was important that we took the entire Government CGA Team and also invited a few key leaders from our current Service Provider.”

The visit included a walking tour of Amazon’s second newly built distribution center located in Jacksonville, giving employees a first-hand look at the full distribution cycle in action, from receiving, processing, and storage to retrieval, packaging and shipping operations.

“This distribution center is similar in many ways to ours and others currently in DLA’s network. It was extremely interesting to see how Amazon has leveraged just the right mix of automated and manual processing to efficiently perform the work being accomplished in their Distribution center,” said Crumb.

Crumb summarized “I noticed high storage density rates which were contributed to utilizing the proper size storage aids in this facility. All areas were clean, organized and free of debris. It was obvious security and safety were integrated into all processes being performed at the distribution center. This was a very beneficial event that provided numerous takeaways for our team who left energized with many new ideas for improving efficiency in their own work areas.”
