The monthlong awareness campaign, recognized each September, promotes family and community disaster and emergency planning throughout the year. The theme for 2019 is “Prepared, Not Scared. Be Ready for Disasters.”

Security and Emergency Services’ representatives will be at the fair to answer questions and assist the public in emergency planning. Many resources will be available to attendees, including guides used to create emergency plans and detailed lists of what to pack in emergency supply kits.

The event goals are to encourage and teach emergency preparedness and to raise awareness of the potential catastrophic effects of manmade or natural disasters. Rick Ferrell, assistant chief and supervisory fire protection specialist, Fire and Emergency Services Branch, DLA Installation Management Richmond said, “We believe community outreach on these vitally important topics could save lives and facilitate effective recovery from disasters and/or critical incidents.”
