BATTLE CREEK, Mich. –
Katharina Sommer performed as a team member of the United States National Codification Bureau located in Battle Creek, Michigan.
“She was an excellent resource contributing to our team’s analysis of international policies and procedures,” said Daniel Gonzalez, Defense Logistics Agency Logistics Information Services branch chief. “Sommer’s value was immediately identified, and she contributed exponentially utilizing her expertise from the German National Codification Bureau.”
DLA Logistics Information Services participates in the Allied Committee 135 which is consists of 63 nations that are either NATO or NATO-sponsored. Each nation is represented by their respective National Codification Bureau.
Sommer is a member of the German National Codification Bureau assigned to the United States Codification Bureau for a one-year tour. The United States and Germany jointly participate in many projects.
“We were able to assign Sommer to complicated projects that have German and U.S. interests in mind,” Gonzalez said. “She led a cost-sharing initiative based on Gross National Income and was instrumental in a joint effort for the NATO Data Exchange Redesign project.”
“Katharina was a pleasure to work with,” said Gonzalez. “She is dedicated to her expertise and continues to learn and grow as an expert in the NATO Codification System. Adding to the challenge of moving to another country, her first week in Battle Creek was during the Polar Vortex. Her enduring spirit showed in that first week. She continued to display this enduring spirit throughout her tour. Any team would benefit from such a wonderful person.”
Meet Katharina Sommer
Katharina Sommer is a participant in the Engineer and Scientist Exchange Program between the German Federal Defense Administration and the U.S. Armed Forces assigned to the U.S. NCB as part of the Defense Logistics Agency, Logistics Information Services in Battle Creek, Michigan.
“Special thanks to the personnel of the U.S. NCB and all the other staff in the building for their support and the welcoming atmosphere,” Sommer said.
Sommer started working for the German Federal Defense Administration in 2009. Her first assignment was in project management at the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, which task is to equip the German Armed Forces with weapon systems. In November 2017, she accepted an assignment as policy and procedures coordinator to the German NCB at the Bundeswehr Logistic Command.
Sommer studied physical technologies at the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, Germany. She continued her studies in mechanical engineering in the branch of studies of aerospace engineering at the Technical University Dresden, Germany.
