Fitness Center move involves plenty of sweat, heavy lifting

By Natalie Skelton, DLA Aviation Public Affairs

The old accommodations for Defense Logistics Agency Installation Management Richmond’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s popular Red Brick Fitness Center weren’t making the grade. While construction of a new Fitness Center gets under way, the workout equipment will be housed in the Community Center on Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia.

MWR is moving its fitness operations into the community center since Building 33 [the longtime location for the fitness center] is set to be demolished,” William Marjenhoff, business recreation director, said.

The relocation is no easy feat; approximately 60 pieces of equipment, weighing a total of 24 ,000 pounds, had to travel from Building 33 to Building 27 (the Community Center), a distance of roughly 200-300 yards.

The move is still in process; staff from Installation Operations Division and MWR continue to relocate and set up the equipment.

Once the move is complete, the gym will be open to all authorized DoD identification cardholders who are 14 and older. Women’s and men’s locker rooms with day-use lockers will be available for gym users.

Marjenhoff said the gym’s capacity will be determined once all the equipment has been installed.

Requirements for gym users to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves have not been established at this time.

The new Fitness Center’s completion date is December 2020, which will be in Building 32, F and G Bays.
