DSCR changes address May 1

By Cathy Hopkins DLA Aviation Public Affairs

Defense Logistics Agency Installation Management Richmond, Virginia, is updating its address to reflect Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia’s main gate location May 1. The address coincides with the installation’s North Gate, located off Strathmore Road in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

The change comes after last year’s legislation enacted by the commonwealth of Virginia required the renaming of the Jefferson Davis Highway corridor by each municipality within the commonwealth.

Richmond City decided to rename its portion to Richmond Highway. However, at the June 2021 meeting of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, the board decided to rename its portion to Route 1.

“Since [DSCR is] in Chesterfield County, we would be under the Route 1 name, if we didn’t take any action ourselves,” said David Gibson, director, DLA Installation Management Richmond. “Rather than follow the county’s naming choice, we felt this was the time to update our address to the location of our main gate, which is the North Gate.”

“I recommended to DLA Aviation Commander Air Force Brig. Gen. David Sanford, who is also the DSCR installation commander, that we change our address to align with our North Gate and he agreed,” said Gibson. “My rationale is that our Visitor Center, Central Mail Facility and Truck Gate are located at the North Gate, which is open 24/7 and is our main gate.  We often get visitors and trucks going to our East Gate and have to redirect them to the North Gate.  They get lost with GPS that takes them to the old 8000 Jefferson Davis Highway address.”

The East Gate access point, located off of Route 1 in Chesterfield County, was updated in 2021, but it is limited to personnel with valid government identifications cards. Additionally, many truckers used the mailing address in GPS which puts them at the East Gate, which they are not authorized to access Once at the East Gate, it is extremely difficult to turn trucks around, because of the tight lane turns.

In January, Dedra Carter, chief of the Operations Support Branch for the installation, began working with Chesterfield County Geographic Information Systems and Architect managers, who in turn coordinated with the servicing post office to ensure the desired address was not already in use.

After about three months, a new address to include a change in zip code was decided upon.  The address is now:

Defense Supply Center Richmond
6090 Strathmore Road
Richmond, Virginia 23237

Interesting Fact While Strathmore Road isn’t named after a person, it is a geographical name of Scottish origin meaning “great valley.”

Carter said the county administrators also worked with Google technicians to update directions on Google Maps and other mapping services to reflect the new address online and make it easier for truck drivers and visitors to get to the correct installation entry point.

Gibson said that his office has also been working with installation tenants, DLA Aviation, DLA Information Operations and DLA Human Resources to review enterprise systems that require the address be updated.
