DLA Aviation at Richmond celebrates April as 9-1-1 awareness month

By Natalie Skelton, DLA Aviation Public Affairs

Defense Logistics Agency Aviation marked 9-1-1 awareness during the month of April, ensuring Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia employees, contractors and visitors know how, when and why to call 9-1-1.

The installation’s efforts follow the nationwide campaign, National 9-1-1 Education Month, during which public safety educators promote important messages about how the system works and what happens when a cell phone or landline phone is used to call for help.

To effectively educate the entire installation, Fire and Emergency Services leaders divided the installation into four sections, focusing on one area during each week of the month.

"Not only can this information be used while on DSCR, but it can also help someone in everyday life," DLA Installation Management Richmond’s Lead Fire Inspector Evron Brightly said.

William Hock, assistant chief of Training and Fire Prevention for DLA Installation Management Richmond’s Fire and Emergency Services said, “One of the things we stress when calling 9-1-1 with a cell phone is that the call goes to Chesterfield County dispatch. It is very important that callers inform dispatchers that they are on DSCR so the call can be transferred to the installation’s emergency communications center.”

9-1-1 Awareness Month is one part of Fire and Emergency Services' annual fire prevention action plan. Other efforts include fire prevention week in October and change your clocks/change your batteries in spring and fall, which remind employees to change smoke detector batteries with each time change.
