Army celebrates 248th birthday

By Nancy Benecki DLA Public Affairs

A classic Army campaign is back for the service’s 248th birthday.

“Our tagline this year is, ‘Be all you can be,’ and our focus is on the Army’s unlimited possibilities,” Army Brig. Gen. David Warshaw, director of the Operational Analysis Department for the Operations and Integration Directorate at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, said during a birthday ceremony June 14 at the McNamara Headquarters Complex.

“The Army has always challenged our soldiers to be all they can be by providing practical, hands-on training and support to cultivate skills and interests that put soldiers on a path for long term success, both in the Army and beyond,” he said.

Employees of all tenant agencies at the complex, including the Defense Logistics Agency, were invited to the birthday celebration.

The Army is one of the nation’s oldest institutions, Warshaw said. Founded on June 14, 1775, the Army is a year older than the Declaration of Independence and 13 years older than the U.S. Constitution, he added.

There are over 200 different jobs in the Army, including logistics, engineering, aviation and medicine. These opportunities allow soldiers to have the diverse skills they need to defend America, he said.

“At any given time around the world, U.S .Army soldiers are training, partnering, defending, assisting or providing aid in support of our nation, our allies, our partners, and most importantly, our democratic ideals,” Warshaw said.

He also thanked the spouses, children and other family members for their contributions and sacrifices as their soldiers trained and sometimes deployed to defend the nation.
