EAP provides support to employees, household members facing personal and professional challenges

By Alexandria Brimage-Gray DLA Public Affairs

Defense Logistics Agency civilian federal employees looking to get counseling, coaching or senior care support for themselves or a member of their household in the new year can get help through the Employee Assistance Program.

“The goal of EAP is to touch everyone in the life of the federal employee,” DLA EAP Consultant Cynthia Clark said. “We know what happens at home impacts the workplace and what happens in the workplace impacts the home life.”

Clark explained that household members include the civilian employee’s spouse, a domestic partner, college-age children, and parents or in-laws that reside in the home regardless of if they are a dependent of the employee.

Employee assistance programs have been a staple in companies’ benefits packages, offering support for employees facing personal and professional challenges. Some common areas for which an EAP can support employees, and their household members include stress management, domestic violence, legal and financial concerns, substance abuse, health and caregiver support and mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression.

Counseling and Well-Being Coaching

The EAP benefit also provides each civilian federal employee and their household member a well-being or life coach to help develop goals and plans for their future.

“Life coaching is more futuristic focused and build on one’s strengths to help reach goals, where counseling tends to focus on helping the individual work through emotional events that have occurred in their past and present,” Clark said.

Under EAP, employees and their household members can receive six sessions of counseling, coaching or a combination of both per issue in a calendar year. The sessions are:

  • Voluntary, Prepaid, and Confidential
  • Services are provided by licensed EAP clinicians to employees and members of their household
  • Available 24/7/365 days a year
