BATTLE CREEK, Mich –
Can you tell us about yourself?
I’m a spiritual man, a father, and a universal person. I’ve owned a business, run a gym, and even had my own boxing column in a magazine. I’ve been inducted into the Golden Gloves Coaches Hall of Fame, which is one of my proudest achievements. Over the years, I’ve crossed paths with judges, lawyers, and state senators. One of my favorite memories is dancing with Ann Richards when she was the governor of Texas.

Tell us about your off-hours coaching.
I’m old-school when it comes to coaching. I don’t just tell my boxers to run; I run with them. It’s all about balance—mental, physical, and spiritual. I follow the “3-B Program”: Books, Bible, and Boxing.

It was the era I grew up in—everyone was a fighter. Some trained seriously, while others just hung out at gyms.
