RICHMOND, Virginia –
“Take your Daughters and Sons to Work Day” was celebrated at Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia, April 28. More than 160 children from various Defense Logistics Agency activities on DSCR participated in the annual event, which was sponsored by the Strategic Acquisitions Directorate and the Equal Employment Opportunity Office.
The theme for this year, “Sparking Aha! Moments,” was open to children ages 8-19.
DLA Aviation’s Deputy Commander Charlie Lilli welcomed the children and employees during an opening ceremony in the Frank B. Lotts Conference Center. He said having a “sparkling aha moment” is about learning something new or getting a new idea and he hoped their day would be filled with aha moments.
Lilli told the children that their parents have an amazing mission to serve their country and encouraged the children to learn about what they do. Lilli explained that their parents buy parts for every aircraft in the Department of Defense and last year they bought $4 billion worth of parts and every part purchased had to be of the best quality. He added their parents buy parts that keep our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines safe every day.
Besides being able to visit their parents’ work areas and learn about their individual jobs, the children visited stations set up in the Lotts Conference Center on post. Activity tables included: wellness and physical fitness activities; family advocacy; installation history; video-teleconferencing; interactive fulfillment order ‘cradle-to-grave' processes; and an Air Force video presentation. Other activities included a fire truck display; a military weapon systems tour; and a nature walk which included a visit to the installation’s famous Bellwood elk. Students ages 13-18 were able to participate in a “dress for success’ event and participate in a mock interview, resume writing workshop, and learn about DLA Aviation job opportunities.
Attendees were also able to visit the annual Environmental Fair that was held simultaneously in the Lotts Conference Center.
