Guam builds resiliency through new resume writing skills

By Jessica Roman DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Members of Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Guam, Marianas, Continuing Government Activity recently attended a job resume skills class that was offered by Navy Base Guam’s Fleet and Family Service.

The class was intended to help employees sharpen their skills to continuously further their government careers in their chosen vocations, and was part of DLA’s ongoing efforts to support workforce resiliency.

Macy Ooka, the director of DLA Distribution Guam, noted that the instructor, Richard Taitague, caught and held the attention of the participants from beginning to end by demonstrating how to use the various USAJOBS tools.   Taitague offered tips on highlighting an individual’s strong points, the preferred resume format, and how to specify job location criteria.  All of these small details have a significant impact on job qualifications, especially if the competition is tight between applicants.

“Mr. Taitague went above and beyond by not only explaining the importance of content and format of our resume but also the intricacies associated with successfully interacting with the USAJOBS process,” said Ooka.

Jay Sternadel, Guam’s contracting officer representative, particularly appreciated the knowledge Taitague shared on how to use VMET to translate prior military training and experience into acceptable college credits.  “The translation of military experience to civilian educational credits is a great tool to help enhance your resume’s content and strength,” he said.

Franklin Leon Guerrero, Guam’s deputy director, received exemplary feedback from all that attended.  “Taitague’s knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for the subject were captivating and truly appreciated,” he said.  “Bravo Zulu to NBG Fleet and Family Service for a job well done.”
