Yokosuka distribution center welcomes new deputy commander

Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Yokosuka, Japan, recently welcomed Roy Jewell as the new deputy commander.

Jewell most recently served as the assistant housing manager at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., and the Fiscal Services supervisor for Yuba Community College District in Marysville, Calif.

Prior to his civilian service, Jewell served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of colonel.  He began his service in uniform as an infantryman, serving as both an executive officer for a basic training brigade headquarters detachment, and company commander for a basic training battalion headquarters company.  He subsequently served multiple command and leadership positions, with expertise in transportation and multi-functional logistics at the tactical, operational and strategic levels.

Key logistical positions held include battalion command of the 302nd Terminal Transportation Battalion in Hawaii; director of Current Operations and deputy G3 with the 377th Theater Sustainment Command in New Orleans and Kuwait; support operations officer with the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command in Los Angeles and Afghanistan; and G7 with the 79th Sustainment Support Command in Los Alamitos, Calif.

Jewell deployed in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in 2006 and 2012, to Kuwait and Afghanistan respectively.  Additionally, he received meritorious unit citations in support of these operations with the 3rd Brigade, 91st Division in 2004 and was awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal for operations during Hurricanes Dennis and Katrina with the 377th Sustainment Command in 2005.

Jewell holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from California State University in Chico, Calif.  He also holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix in Sacramento, Calif., and a Masters of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa.  His military education includes the Combined Logistics Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College, the Logistics Executive Development Course, and Senior Service College.  While at the Army War College, he also completed the LOGTECH Advanced Program of Logistics and Technology, through the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School of Technology.

Jewell’s uniformed decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (8th Award), Army Commendation Medal (8th Award), Army Achievement Medal (8th Award), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award, NATO Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, National Defense Service Medal w/Bronze Service Star, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

He has also competed the Defense Distribution Management Course, the Mobilization Deployment Planners Courses, the Unit Movement Officers Deployment Course, the DoD Emergency Preparedness Course, and earned a Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma processes while deployed to Afghanistan. 

Jewell is a life member of the International Society of Logistics (SOLE), holding the title of Demonstrated Master Logistician.  He is also an Ancient Order of Saint Christopher awardee of the U.S. Army Transportation CORPS Regimental Association.
